If you follow the Annapolis Hyundai blog on a regular basis, you'll know we've been making a lot of posts as of late on the developments the South Korean automaker has been making on their H2 technology. As we told you last month, Hyundai believes that hydrogen fuel cells are the future of the automotive industry. Recently, Hyundai's chief of North American operations, John Krafcik, did an interview with Plug In Cars about the benefits of these zero-emission cars over EVs.

There's more to Hyundai than simply offering the best in green innovation. They like to employ people with that mindset as well, and Mr. Krafcik is definitely one of them. His views on fuel cell technology, though, isn't just a matter of environmentalism, but of practicality.

"I've driven a lot of the competitors' electric cars," said Mr. Krafcik in the interview. "I spent last weekend in an electric vehicle, and I was amazed at how difficult it was to get the car charged--there aren't enough public stations. And it comes down to the fact that you're carrying around 1,000 lbs of batteries that weight the same empty or full. There's so much inherent waste and inefficiency in that concept." 1

What's more, Mr. Krafcik goes on, is that EV batteries tend to lose charge the longer the car remains parked--on average, about 1 percent a day. This, he says, is one of the reasons why Hyundai's scales are tilted more towards H2 technology.

As we told you, Hyundai plans to start introducing the hydrogen variant of the Tucson stateside in the near future.
