This month, the IIHS finished up testing of the 2017 Santa Fe Sport, and the results came back beautifully.

To earn a Top Safety Pick+, the IIHS's highest possible award, the Santa Fe Sport had to earn top ratings in all five test categories, under the organization's new, more stringent standards. It also needed to offer front-crash-prevention technology rated as at least advanced. The Santa Fe Sport's front-crash prevention was rated superior.

The newer, safer Santa Fe Sport bolstered up its protection for small-overlap collisions compared with the 2016 model. Video of the small-overlap crash test looks gruesome, but, you'll notice that the test dummy's head strikes the airbags perfectly, and despite the front-end crumpling and shredding, the cabin and driver foot-well area remain structurally intact.

The Hyundai Santa Fe, sans Sport, is still awaiting results of the small-overlap and front-crash-prevention test. Automatic emergency braking is new to the Santa Fe this year, which means it may also qualify for a Top Safety Pick+.
